TERMITES
In the US, termite damage costs homeowners US$5 billion each year, and we are seeing a similar trend here in the Philippines.

There are over 200 species of termites in the Philippines. The tropical environment and high humidity are ideal conditions for termites. A termite queen produces 30,000 eggs per day, so left untreated, a colony will quickly establish a firm grip on a property.
IDENTIFICATION - Ant or Termite
ANT

  • Ants have slim noticeable waists.
  • Ants have "clubbed" or bent antennae.
  • Ants have longer legs.
  • If wings are present, the front wings will be longer than the back wings.
TERMITE

  • Termites have thick waists.
  • Termites have straight antennae.
  • Termites have shorter legs.
  • When wings are present, both pairs of wings are the same size.
INSPECTION
Given the speed in which a colony can appear, DBMPC inspects our clients' properties on a quarterly basis. When we carry out a termite inspection, there are a number of telltale signs that we look out for as they are key indicators of termite activity.

MOUNDS

Mounds - The most obvious sign is the presence of a large mud mound that continues to grow. It is typically located against a wall (for support) and has a hard exterior. Left untreated, mounds can grow to be extremely large and will, in time, generate a network of smaller mounds as new colonies are established. Care should be taken not to disturb the mound until it is treated.
MUB TUBES

Mud Tubes - These run vertically or otherwise to connect the nest to a wooden food source. Mud tubes are a definite sign of termite infestation, however, do not assume that the absence of mud tubes means that no infestation exists, since there are other ways that termites reach food sources.
Failed Electrics

Non working electrical switches or sockets - Termites and other pests such as ants will often use the electrical conduit inside the walls to move unnoticed around the property. Over time, the mud build up can interfere with the electrical connections and prevent them from working.
Damaged Wood

Damaged wood, buckling or bubbling paint or brittle drywall - If you tap the damaged wood with the end of a screwdriver or knife, you will hear a dull thud. Wood suspected of termite damage can be further inspected by probing the surface with the screwdriver or pocket knife to expose tunnels.

Discarded Wings

Discarded Wings - Before swarmers enter the next stage of development, they will shed their wings, which are often left in scattered piles near windows or light sources.
TREATMENT
When it comes to termites, prevention is always better than cure, and more and more people are looking to termite-proof their property.

However, if you are unfortunate enough to find an active subterranean termite infestation on your property, you must take immediate action. A queen will lay on average 30,000 eggs a day, so delaying treatment by just a few weeks will see a dramatic increase in the colony size and an increase in property damage.

DBMPC are experts in dealing with the management and eradication of termite infestations. Our qualified technicians will be able to advise you on what is the most appropriate treatment depending on the configuration of your property, the level of infestation, and your budget.
